Sprayberry High School PTSA

ECCC Margie Hatfield Scholarships – apply by 2/28!

Each spring the East Cobb County Council (ECCC) of PTAs awards one $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior from each of the six ECCC high schools. The scholarship, known as the Margie Hatfield Scholarship, honors the dedication and years of service given by Mrs. Hatfield to the youth of our council. In recognition of her volunteer involvement, the Margie Hatfield Scholarship Fund awards deserving seniors who have made significant contributions to the community. Any graduating senior enrolling in a full-time course of study at any institute of higher learning may apply. Students, however, must be a member of SHS PTSA, and if awarded a scholarship, must use the funds for continuing education. Scholarship applications are due on 2/28/18. Please go HERE for more information and the application.

PTSA Senior Scholarships

The PTSA will release the 2018 senior scholarship essay question next week. We’ll announce it on our social media accounts, in e-Buzz, and on our website. Stay tuned! The senior MUST be a member of PTSA in order to apply for our scholarships. We’ll award ten $1,000 scholarships later this semester. You can join online or by dropping off our membership form with payment to the front office.

Join the PTSA Board in 2018-2019

The current PTSA Executive Board has served for two years and must step down at the end of the 2017-2018 school year in May 2018. We have already filled some positions (VP & Treasurer) but are in need of a PTSA President and Secretary. Come join a great team (some current members are returning in different capacities) and give back to your school. We have a wonderful relationship with SHS Administration and staff and look forward to your input and ideas. If you are interested in learning more about the President or Secretary positions, please email us!

On behalf of the Sprayberry PTSA Executive Committee & Craft Show Committee, we’d like to thank you – our vendors, shoppers, volunteers, and supporters for a great 35th Annual Arts & Crafts Show! It was amazing! Our Craft Show Committee worked tirelessly to put on a great show and we appreciate their hard work and the many volunteer hours they dedicated to this year’s edition. We’d also like thank our parent (and grandparent) volunteers that helped during the show – they were key to making it a success and the reason the show ran as smoothly as possible. To our employees – school resource officers and custodial staff – thank you for your hard work and dedication. We could not run the show without you! To our student volunteers, you are simply the best! We already know you are the best kept secret in Cobb and whenever we need you, you are there! Thank you for doing whatever was needed with a good attitude and great intentions. To our vendors, we appreciate your continued support of our show. The show benefits our students and community in so many ways: scholarships, teacher grants, supporting events around the school. We can’t wait to see you in 2018!

Why Sprayberry? So many reasons!

* SHS American Lit and U.S. History students outscored 5 of the6 magnet schools in the proficient and distinguished levels of the EOC.
* SHS Geometry students outscored 4 of 6 magnet schools in the proficient and distinguished levels on the EOC.
* Sprayberry’s CCRPI Progress scores are higher than all 6 magnet schools.

PTSA Scholarships – Seniors, Plan Ahead!

Did you know the SHS PTSA awarded $10,000 in scholarships to our students last year? It’s true and we’re doing it again this year! Please note, the senior MUST be a member of SHS to apply. It only costs $5 and you can join at this Friday’s football game VS. Lassiter, join at Open House later this month, join online, or fill out our form and drop it off at the front office. Some things that may surprise you:
– Our scholarships are essay-based and have no GPA requirements
– All seniors who are PTSA members are eligible to apply including those participating in MOWR.
– There are no restrictions on how you can use the money. The student can use it to pay tuition at a technical school, community college, 4-year college, for books, meal plans, equipment such as computers and more.
– Our essay questions are judged by an outside panel who do not know our students or any information about their GPA, class rank, etc.
– One of our scholarships is community-service based. If you have completed 125 hours of community service and are a PTSA member you are eligible to apply!
Please keep all of this in mind and encourage your senior to join PTSA and apply for the scholarships later this school year. We’ll announce the application period in this newsletter, on our website, and through the SHS Counseling Office and morning announcements. There’s no excuse, every senior should apply!

Sprayberry Accolades!

Sprayberry is proud to once again be included in the Washington Post’s list of “America’s Most Challenging High Schools.” The rankings are computed through an index formula that calculates the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year, divided by the number of seniors who graduated that year. This year, only 12 percent of the approximately 22,000 U.S. public high schools were placed on this national list.
